It's shrill and filled with confidence. They prick their ears and sniff the air. Who is that walking, coming near? Someone who will touch your nose, And rub your forehead, talk in prose, Then paint your portrait as you stand, With strokes made fine by brush in hand. |

They may be cow ponies or players in the rodeo game, pleasure horses or bearers of pack and pannier. No matter their specific roles, they are as much a part of this land as the silvery sage that blankets the earth.

Winds whisper ghostlike messages resounding the cries of Indians, the hoofbeats of spirit ponies, the whistles of cowboys, and the whinnies of quarter horses. The echos of the past sweep into the present as horses cross the river at Sundance Ridge. |
