A Journey in Fine Art
(About Susan)

"I strive to capture in my work the essence and meaning of those natural and historic things enjoyed by
my generation. In that way their memory might be preserved for those who follow."

Susan inherited her first oil painting supplies from her grandmother, an accomplished artist, and learned
to use them thus beginning her career as an oil painter.
Susan is a self-taught artist.

Susan's painting subjects are born of the Rocky Mountain region. The high country landscapes intrigue her, the sagas and tales associated with them delight her, and the spirit of the land comforts her.

Susan also treasures the unique qualities of the high plains for they set the stage for many of history's dramatic plays. She finds genuine reward in portraying the essence and spirit of this country.

In combining the beauty of the west with its chronicles, its legends, or its comtemporary attributes, Susan creates narrative paintings that exhibit multiple dimensions of meaning.

Susan has participated in many art shows including the Colorado Governor's Invitational Art Show and Sale
and the International Juried Women Artists of the West Show.
She is the recipient of many awards including Peoples' Choice and Judge's Awards, and her work has appeared in several major publications.
Her paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.
Crumpled yet preserved are the scribbles of Susan's childhood.

An old black typewriter and reams of paper were the tools Susan used during her grade school years to convey her emotions and childhood fantasies in story form. Illustrating these writings became her entryway into the world of art and soon her artistic expressions appeared on everything from lesson paper to windowpanes.

Much of Susan's youth was spent hiking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding in the Rocky Mountains. Susan developed a great love for the outdoors that has stayed with her through the years, a love that is reflected in her work.
As a young adult Susan traveled across Europe with her family. Years later farms and farmhouses of Scandinavia and the Netherlands became some of her favorite painting subjects.
From an early age Susan was drawn to the performing arts, and at the age of seven became a musician. Today her studio is filled with the sounds of music. It might be the thundering storm of the classical, the profound voice of the blues, or the melodies born of the cowboy and his guitar.
Susan lived in the Midwest for a short time. In a little house on the Kansas prairie she taught herself to paint. Consumed by a passion to master the art she worked day and night to achieve that much-desired goal. She developed a style that has been maintained throughout her career.
